Flag for Queertopia: Tendrils

Designed and stitched in response to FLAGS FOR QUEERTOPIAS, a group show asking participants to consider queer joy and create a flag for their  imagined queer utopia. Shown at The Margate School for the Margate Pride Art Trail 2021, with an accompanying spoken text piece.

Exhibited with Festenforfagfolx (Universal Ornament 1) as part of ‘Queer Art(ists) Now’ 2018.

Colour, forms and motifs call back and forth between the two works. Queerly hued and precariously placed, the works are assembled as both protective screening and a welcome in; pinked, fringed and shimmering, soft materials are stuffed to provide comfort and starched in readiness for celebration.

“Arranged in conversation with itself, the work is about queer cohabitation; the discussion, decision and continual renegotiation of the desire to live together. The materials used in the work combine objects and motifs that reference both the memories of time spent away together, along with hopeful future furnishing decisions.”
